4 Famous Resume Lies and Their Lessons - FlexJobs

4 Famous Resume Lies and Their Lessons - FlexJobs4 Famous Resume Lies and Their Lessons -324 Famous Resume Lies and Their LessonsThe Lie Scott Thompson, CEO of Yahoo, told resume lies about his education stating he earned degrees in accounting AND computer science, when never received the latter. The Lesson If you dont have the specific educational credentials for your field, its much better to take classes than to tell resume lies about earning an entire degree on your resume. Educational credentials are easily checked, so be smart and actually earn the credentials you list. The Lie Robert Irvine, the former star of Food Networks Dinner Impossible, was caught over-stating his work history and lost his television show in 2008. While Irvine did work for the White House and Britains Royal Family, he did not as he stated create Princess Dianas wedding cake, cook White House Dinners, nor was he knighted by the queen. Big resume lies such as these are typically discovered. The Lesson If yo uve got great experience on your resume, dont muck it up by embellishing your already-solid credentials. Have confidence in your true skills and abilities, rather than claiming someone elses. Irvines skills were still so excellent he was invited back to the Food Network in 2009 and continues to host or guest star in a variety of successful shows. It turns out he didnt really need to tell resume lies, did he?The Lie Michael Brown, the former Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), resigned after his mishandling of the response to Hurricane Katrina. To get the job in the first place, Brown claimed hed overseen emergency services for the City of Edmund, Oklahoma and that hed worked at the University of Central Oklahoma as a professor, but neither of these were true. The Lesson Telling lies on your resume can hurt a lot more than just your reputation and your career prospects. In situations where public health and safety are at stake, landing a job youre not qualified for by offering false information on your job application can have disastrous consequences. The Lie Current Vice President Joe Biden ran for president way back in 1988, but during the campaign it was discovered he song about attending law school on a full scholarship (he had only a partial scholarship) and about graduating in the top half of his class (he was 76th out of 85). When the truth came out, Biden had to abandon his presidential bid.The Lesson On your resume, the most important information you should give about your education are the degrees you earned. Why add a bunch of resume lies in the form ofexaggerated half-truths about scholarships and class placement? We often feel the need to bump ourselves up a bit to compete with other job candidates, but those little white lies can be just as detrimental as the big ones. So, the next time youre updating your resume, go through each bit of information to make sure youre already telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about your qualifications. Most of the people on this list lied when they were young and just starting their careers, but the truth still haunted them years later. Dont make the same mistake clean up your resume now so you dont have to worry about later. Resume lies are just not worth it.Readers, have you heard of other famous resume lies? Share with us

Sample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to Quit

Sample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to QuitSample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to QuitSometimes your resignation brings you a sigh of relief, and you are counting your lucky stars to get out of your current job. Maybe you had an employer who was awful or coworkers who gossiped and slacked off on the job.Perhaps your job was so boring that, even trying as hard as you could, you were unable to make the daily grind more interesting. Whatever your reason for wanting to quit, youll want to keep your leave-taking professional. Your resignation letter should reflect a positive, optimistic, forward-looking spirit. Dont blow possible future opportunities with a negative resignation. You never know where or when you could run into the people who witness your resignation and read your resignation letter. You want them to feel positive about you for the future. They could end up in your new company, at your new job, or affect whether you are hired or promoted in the futur e. You just never know, as lifes career course is impossible to predict. Consequently, keep your resignation positive and upbeat. Dont leave a negative impression with your resignation in your permanent personnel file. You can resign from your job in a positive manner. You wont regret putting a positive spin on your resignation from your job, even when youre just happy to get out of there. Resist the temptation to send a resignation letter that says, Im outta here, or Good luck, suckers. Both of these negative approaches were used by not-too-smart quitters in the past. Resignation Letter Dos and Donts Begin your resignation letter with a standard date, the name of theaddressee, usually your direct manager or supervisor, and company address, just as you would any business letter. If you have personal stationery, plan to print the resignation letter to fit your stationery. If not, use a plain piece of quality white paper to print your resignation letter. Never write a resignation letter using your current employers stationery. (Yes, it has happened- unfortunately.) Your resignation letter, especially in the instance of an employer youd like to forget, can be short and sweet. If there was something- anything- that you liked about your job, you can mention it. Make sure that you copy Human Resources for your file and to trigger all of the necessary employment ending events. Also, a good policy is to sleep on your letter overnight before mailing it, to ensure that it is appropriate when you reread your resignation letter in the morning. Again, you can professionally resign without burning bridges. Youll be happy that you did, at some point in time. How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation

How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap ConversationHow the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation Equal Pay Day is celebrated this year on April 2, a day meant to raise awareness about the gap between men and womens wages . Research shows that today, in 2019, the gap sits at 21 cents between white women and men- and only widens for women of color and other ethnicities . Perhaps whats even mora disturbing is the number of people who refuse to believe the pay gap even exists Many people attribute the gap to womens choices to take time off to start and raise families, or to enter into industries that offer lower starting pay. But organizations such as the American Association of University Women (or AAUW) are working diligently to not only close the pay gap but change the conversation surrounding it. As its CEO Kim Churches explains, AAUWs mission is to advance gender equity for wom en and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Pay equity is a critical part of what we do Until there is equal pay for equal work, women will never achieve full equality. But its employees believe closing the gap isnt just about advancing womens rights to equality- its also about ushering in economic change that will positively impact everyone in the U.S.The gender pay gap hinders women throughout their lives, from the day they leave college with higher levels of debt, to when they are raising families, all the way into retirement when women collect less in pensions and Social Security, explains Churches. And, as a result, more women than men are living below the poverty level. But, she continues, this isnt only about women Equal pay is a matter of basic fairness that benefits everyone- women, their families, their communities, employers, ur economy, and our society as a whole. And Churches has a message for those who dont believe the pay gap exists The pay gap is math, n ot myth, she says. Women arent choosing lower paying jobs- rather, certain jobs pay less because they are dominated by women. An example Librarians predominantly women earn less than IT professionals, who are mostly men. But being a librarian entails at least the same level of skills and training than an IT professional, in some cases more.According to Glassdoors own Salary Tool , which allows users to search the median salaries in their chosen fields by job title, Churches is correct An IT professional can expect to be paid $85,460, according to Glassdoor , while a librarian can expect to earn $57,135 per year .Whats more, AAUW believes societal expectations have steered women into roles that pay less money , such as teachers, counselors, and childcare workers, Churches says, which is an important distinction in the conversation about whether women are to blame for any wage gap that may (or may not, according to naysayers) exist. In fields traditionally dominated by men, th ere are still barriers and biases that get in the way of womens success, she says. The AAUW has the research to back up these claims. AAUWs research has shown, in an apples-to-apples comparison, just one year out of college, women are paid almost 7percent less than their male colleagues who made the same degree and career choices, Churches says. Put another way, a man and woman who graduate the same year, with the same degree, and who are hired for the same job at the same company would be paid differently. Our research shows the pay gap exists for every degree level and in every occupation, she continues. In fact, when women enter male-dominated, high paying professions, salaries as a whole actually decrease. That means that in high-paying fields such as technology or medicine or finance, women experience an even greater pay gap than in other industries. Churches sums up how many feel Hard to believe this is still happening in 2019, but it is.Its not easy to fight for equal pay- especially when the gap itself isnt even equal. The AAUWs latest research report, The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap , shows that black women, on average, are paid just 61 cents- while Native American women make 58 cents and Latina women earn just 53 cents- of what men are paid in the same exact jobs. There are complex and deep-rooted reasons for this, but the bottom line is that women of color live at the intersection of racism and sexism, explains Churches. The historical experience of minorities in this country has resulted in an enormous sortiment of economic inequality, and the wider pay gap is just one manifestation of that. Consider this The typical black household possesses just six percent of the wealth owned by the typical white household, and this carries over into challenges for womens opportunities in education and job choice. And the wealth disparity is similar with other racial and ethnic groups. But the AAUW is aggressively advocating for change, despite the challenges, Churches says, and for a long time. Some 55 years ago, it advocated for the Equal Pay Act of 1963 , a measure aimed at stopping wage disparity based on sex. The AAUW also stood beside President Barack Obama when he signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act , an act that gives federal recourse to employees who believe they have been victims of pay discrimination. Today, were continuing our work to advance pay equity on many fronts, says Churches. Our AAUW members and advocates are working with states and localities to pass equal pay laws- and were seeing a tremendous momentum. In fact, last year along, 40 states and Washington, D.C. considered legislation to help close the gender pay gap, she says, with six states successfully enacting new laws. And on a national level, we are working to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act , which would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963.The AAUW also works directly with employers to improve their policies, practices, and workplace cultures so they can move toward pay equity and encourage more women to succeed in leadership roles, Churches describes. And were working with individual women by training them valuable salary negotiation skills through our proven Work Smart program , which offers in-person training as well as a free online course available to anyone. We have a bold goal of training 10 mio women in salary negotiation by 2022. Its efforts seem to be paying off, at least in the private sector Companies are very aware that they need to achieve pay equity so they can attract the strongest possible workforce, says Churches. And they also realize that paying people fairly is good for their bottom line They know that equal pay fosters higher retention rates and raises productivity. So, every day, were hearing more about employers who are ready and eager to do the right thing. If you, too, would like to help close the pay gap, the AAUW says there is plenty of work to go around. A great first step, C hurches says, would be to pay attention to local, state, and federal legislation on the pay gap and be poised to contact your elected officials whenever possible to encourage them to support measures that will advance equal pay. The AAUW also offers a Two-Minute Activist tool, which will keep you up-to-date on important pay news and then supply you the tools- like letter templates and addresses- to take action.Of course, closing the pay gap can start with you, literally. If you can negotiate higher pay for yourself, you are working to close that gap. To help on that front, we created Work Smart , an easy online course that teaches women salary negotiation skills- and weve set a bold goal of training 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022, says Churches. The course takes a very practical- and effective- approach toward salary negotiation We teach women how research salaries in their fields and geographic areas so they have accurate expectations about what a particular po sition should pay. And you can also always check out Glassdoors ample resources for how to negotiate a higher salary , too

Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014

Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014 Sommers, author of Think Like a Futurist Know What Changes, What Doesnt, And Whats Next(Jossey-Bass, 2013)You may be downing your Starbucks Venti. You may be driving your car, or telling your kids to pick up their backpacks. Whatever youre doing, youre thinking about the future. The human brain is wired to make predictions. Constantly. In each moment, its assessing the situation and, based on past experience, makes assumptions about what comes nextHaving landed a big project over coffee, youll tell your assistant to clear all personal appointments from your calendar for the next monthWhen the queue to the freeway entrance ramp is longer than usual, youll plan an alternate route homeWhen the tell-tale stink of stale sweat wafts into your house, youll know that your son needs to replace the dirty gym clothes in his pack with a fresh set for t omorrow.Thinking Ahead vs Thinking Like a FuturistYour brain is jumping ahead even as you read this sentence, interpreting marks on the page as familiar letters, words, sentences, and meaning. The vocabulary is quite basic, so you already know what comes ________.See, you are thinking about the future. (Correct answer Next) But you are not thinking like a futurist.Heres the difference. Thinking about the future uses past experience to anticipate what comes next. Thinking like a futurist rejects this backward-looking orientation and instead looks sideways, backwards, forwards, and upside down in buchen to envision an unexperienced, and often unexpected, future it is a different exercise of the brain.Futurist Thinking in Business Neurologically, thinking about the future is simply a reconfiguration of past memories and feelings. We know this because, using brain scans, cognitive scientists have recently observed that the area of the brain that lights up when we recall a memory also l ights up when were asked to imagine a future event.Early in the human evolutionary process, this quick-fill pattern of foresight helped us run the other way when, say, we recognized the paw prints of a Saber-toothed tiger. If he was there yesterday hell be there again today. This pattern of thinking is also used in cumulative learning (from arithmetic to algebra to calculus), to get through everyday tasks efficiently. And, if you ascribe to Malcolm Gladwells Outliers rule of 10,000 hours, achieve mastery in your field. However, pulling from the past to create the future can also trap you in what I call the Permanent Present, a linear continuation of current conditions. In a world that is increasingly discontinuous, the brains default prediction mechanism is a liability. Witness the erosion of market share of the once dominant Blackberry smartphone, plummeting from a Crackberry-worthy 44% in 2009 to a Slackberry-nadir of 1% in 2013.Contrarily, by committing to a bold, future-forward d igital sttarifgy aimed at Millennials, Burberrys stock price rose 200% in six years. Burberrys brand story remains consistent with its heritage as a 150-year-old luxury brand and, by reimagining retail as a digital-first experience, it is also consistent with where the future is headed. What worked for Burberry worked for innovators like Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Warby Parker, and it will work for you a creative leap into a scenario that looks different than your past.Train your Brain to Think Like a FuturistCreative leaps come when memories are combined in unexpected ways what neuroscientists call associative fluency a facility that grows in direct proportion to the memories it draws from. It also grows with practice here are three tips for training your brain to think like a futurist1.Change perspectiveChoose experiences that literally shift your perspective Go skydiving. Interview someone whose experience and beliefs are different than your own. Take a survival challe nge. Challenge yourself to do something thats scary every day.2.Look under the hoodGet curious about how things work. Dive into different disciplines and keep asking why Study philosophy. Go the planetarium. Talk to a political campaign manager. Listen to science lecturers. Read history. Visit a factory. Take the opposing side of an issue.3.Give it a restAn unfocused state of mind is often where it all comes together. As you turn down your attention on the external world, your brain will start connecting unrelated experiences in new ways Take a walk. Stare out the window. Lie in the sun. Get a massage. Book a session in a flotation tank. Meditate. Sit by the fire, or on a porch. Paint a room. Go running.Use these three steps in innovationchallenges or whenever you feel stuck. Build them into your problem-solving method, and in workshops. The more you practice, the more your associative fluency will grow, and the more your brain will fill in the blanks of the future with new possibil ities. The rise of Internet of Things, Big Data, and 3D printing is challenging everything we already know. Its also accelerating the rate of change and of innovation. To navigate this future, our thinking has to become as rich and varied as the world around us a world that demands that each of us is thinking like a futurist.Author BioCecily Sommers, author of Think Like a Futurist Know What Changes, What Doesnt, And Whats Next(Jossey-Bass, 2013) is the founder and president of The Push Institute, a non-profit think tank that tracks significant global trends and their implications for business, government, and the non-profit sector. The Future of Job Applications

The Future of Job Applications The Future of Job Applications Joblandseekers, fuelled by the context of fierce competition, are also debating the use of a resume. In a piece on virtual job hunting, the BBCs technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones, emphasizes that until recently, the process of seeking a job followed a familiar routinenow though, those who want to stand out in a crowded job market are resorting to more sophisticated approaches. The truth is that the status quo has few friends on either side of the coin. As such, there have been several general proposals to reinvent the job application process. Without naming names, lets examine and assess the optionsOnline, but the saatkorn AKA, the seemingly sensible one-step at a time approach that utilizes erreichbar resumetemplates. After all traditional resume formats typed up in word-processing software have long been the common standard. This type of change could be better if done gradually (for the bulk of candidates and r ecruiters alike). Using such tools job seekers can start with a structured template, and schliff with an impressive looking resume.ProsEasier to have a structure than starting with a blank screenSimple to share and track communicationsLess risky approach, well-suited to more conventional industries and less creative jobseekersConsDoesnt give employers any more information than a conventional resumeTemplates that are too structured limits the ability of the job seeker to show their creativityA resume created with a Word processor is already in an electronic formatI see this as a useful tool for jobseekers, but too small a step at addressing current concerns to become a new standard.Creative/VideosThere have been those who suggest that applicants should be as free as possible and put together their own creative presentation, with limited guidelines. This approach was recently adopted by Union Square Ventures, who have been requesting applicants to submit links representing their web p resence and short videos when applying for jobs at the venture capital firm. They say this process nets better-quality candidates. UK job seeker Graeme Anthony was looking for a PR job when he put together a compelling video that attracted big audiences. It shows off my personality in a way a paper CV cant, he said.ProsProvides employers with a greater understanding of a candidates personality and style, as well as a more thorough story of what they have achieved during their careerCandidates can choose a domain for their presentation, and utilize inbound marketing techniques so their target audience will find itCandidates can truly stand-out no two applications can be the sameConsFor once-off low-volume applications geared towards a creative market, this can be a lot of fun. But what about everyone else? This style of application is difficult to manage within a companys existing HR processes and systems. Companies who are hiring more than ten people may find managing and reviewing t hese entries simply too complicatedReviewing such presentations can be time consuming. HR professionals are already pulled in several directions, with not enough time in the day to complete daily tasks, let alone when they need to review 500 videos or creative websitesThey lack data that is important in determining a candidates fit for the jobFor non-creative job seekers, these are too difficult to put togetherRarely relevant to positions outside technology, design, sales, marketing and PRThis may indeed become more common in certain industries, but will need to be a component of an integrated approach for the mainstream.InfographicAs I mentioned in my brde post, given that many enjoy reviewing data visually, we are increasingly being surrounded by infographics. Predictably, ideas have been proposed to replace resumes with graphics. This is one of the more visually pleasing options available.ProsCan be exciting to put together, and allows creative skills to flare for the right cand idateAbility to portray a different side to a job seekers skill-setThe end result can look fantastic in contrast to current conventionsConsThe style can be confusing for resume reviewers, and could take too long to review in a volume situationWhilst they are sometimes superb introductions, they lack the necessary data behind themMore attention will inevitably be given to the design rather than the data it representsAgain, job seekers who arent creatively minded will find this concept difficult and frustratingI see value in these for recruiters in being able to easily digest and review information, but surely these should remain the powerful book cover to the rest of the candidates information.Social networksWith the web becoming more social by the day, where better to develop an online presence than using a social network, where users can easily interact with current and potential employers. As Allison Cheston correctly points out networking is still the number one way people find c areers. Further, these networks now offer features for users to easily apply for job opportunities.ProsPowerful tool to develop relationships with potential employersProfiles are search-engine optimized, so users can be found easilyEasy to update, as it is important to maintain these even when not necessarily looking for a jobConsYou only get one profile, and therefore it is very difficult to customize it for a particular positionThe information in such a profile is more at the introductory and narrative level perfect for developing a network, but not detailed enough to get a jobbehauptung networks often have a one design fits-all for the profiles, which doesnt allow a candidate to show enough of their personality and styleThese are less useful for jobseekers earlier in their careers without a substantial business networkOnline social networks have already changed the recruiting process. However I see the use of these as complimentary tools to the more general standard approach. All of these approaches have creative products that are allowing jobseekers to change the way they apply for job opportunities. And sure, each of these has significant value and gaining traction in different industries and job types. But what it takes to become the new common ticket is a combination of the above, with the flexibility for each industry to set their own standards within a designated framework. Here, I wanted to take products out of the equation, as this discussion is about something much larger the themes. Navy Criminal Disqualifications for Enlistment

Navy Criminal Disqualifications for EnlistmentNavy Criminal Disqualifications for EnlistmentCertain criminal offenses may preclude enlistment in the United States Navy. Its important to bedrngnise that conviction is elend necessarily required. The Navy is more interested in whether or not the person actually committed the offense, rather than whether or not some court was lenient or generous in how they handled/prosecuted the offense. For the purposes of enlistment in the military, there is no such thing as a sealed record, or an expunged record. One is required, by law, to list all incidents where one was arrested or charged, regardless of the final outcome. Whether or not an offense counts or not, depends on whether there was a conviction or any type of adverse adjudication. When it comes to criminal offenses, enlistment qualifications, and waivers, the following definitions apply. Conviction A conviction is the act of finding a person guilty of a crime, offense or other violat ion of law by a court or competent jurisdiction or other authorized adjudicative authority. This includes fines and forfeiture of bond in lieu of trial. Adverse Adjudication (Adult or Juvenile) Adverse adjudication refers to any conviction, finding, decision, sentence, judgment, or disposition other than unconditionally dropped, unconditionally dismissed, or acquitted. Participation in a pretrial intervention program as defined below must be processed in the same manner as an adverse adjudication. Pretrial Intervention/Deferment Every state has a program by which offenses are diverted out of the regular criminal process for a probationary period. While the programs vary from state to state, they all require the defendant to meet some requirement (e.g., reporting or non-reporting probation, restitution, or community service), after successful completion of which the charge is disposed of in a way that does not result in a final adjudication of guilt. Charges disposed of in th is manner must be processed as an adverse adjudication. Stet Processes A stet process is a judgment that all further action in a case be stayed. Frequently referred to as a stet, it is often used by prosecutors to dispose of criminal action without actually having to try a case on its merits. A stet may be considered as equivalent to dropping charges if the prosecutor does not contemplate any further proceedings on the case and the case has not been handled through a pretrial deferment program. A letter from the district attorney is required to verify a stet. Nolle Prosequi Commonly called nol pros, nolle prosequi is a formal entry on the record that the prosecutor will not prosecute the case any further. A nol pros may be considered equivalent to dropping charges if the prosecutor does not contemplate any further proceedings on the case and the case has not been handled through a pretrial deferment program. For enlistment purposes, the Navy classifies offenses into four are as Chart A Minor Traffic Violations Requires a waiver for six or more violations.Chart B Minor Non-Traffic Violations/Minor Misdemeanors Requires a waiver for three or more violations.Chart C Non-Minor Misdemeanors Requires a waiver for one or more violations.Chart D Felonies Requires a waiver for one or more violations. Felony waivers are extremely rare.

Individual Drill - Commands

Individual Drill - Commands Individual Drill - Commands Whether marching in formation to get from A to B on base or honoring a VIP at a formal parade, marching in unison is practiced throughout all basic training programs throughout the military. The formal parades require a sharper precision as military brass are typically observing the units marching and their progress as they evolve from civilians into military members. Depending upon the branch of service, these type of parades and marching of large units are held for new members of the military attending one of many accession programs into the military (ROTC, Service Academies, Basic Training, Boot Camp). Individual Drill In a drill type formation, a military unit executes precise movements from one formation to another or marches from one place to another. In maintaining this precision, the marching is standardized to a 24-inch step and performed at a cadence of 100 to 120 steps per minute. Each individual must adapt to performing the movements precisely. The unit responds to move together on command. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions on how to execute drill commands. Courtesy of the Air Force. Marching Basics When you are commanded to march from a halt, your steps begin with the left foot. The exceptions are with command right step and close march. For turns, the preparatory command and the command of execution are given as the heel of the foot in the direction of the turn strikes the ground. When making turns in a single formation, the preparatory command is given as the heel of the one foot (left or right depending on the command) strikes the ground, and the command of execution is given when the heel of that same foot next strikes the ground. When there are multiple units marching, the pause between commands is three paces to allow time for subordinate commanders to give supplementary commands. Rest Positions These are performed from a halt at a position of attention. There are four rest positions: parade rest, at ease, rest, and fall out. Parade Rest Command: Parade, RESTOn the command REST, the left foot is raised from the hip (knee straight) to barely clear the ground and moved quickly to the left, so your heels are 12 inches apart on the inside of the heels.Your legs are straight and heels are in line.(keep knees slightly bent - do not lock your knees or you will pass out when standing at attention or parade rest for long periods of time)At the same time as the left foot moves, the arms are brought to the back of the body while fully extended. The hands are uncupped during this movement.Once the arms are in the back of the body, your fingers are extended and joined, pointing towards the ground, palms facing outward. The right hand is in the palm of the left hand. The right thumb is over the left thumb so they form a letter X.Remain immobile and silent with head up and eyes straight ahead. At Ease Command: AT EASEOn the command AT EASE, you must keep your right foot in place and remain silent and in position in formation. You can otherwise relax in a standing position. Rest Command: RESTOn the command REST, you are in the same posture as in at ease, but you are allowed to speak moderately. Fall Out Command: FALL OUTOn the command FALL OUT, you can either relax while standing or you can break ranks but remain in the immediate area. You can disperse however you wish. You are allowed to speak moderately. Resuming Attention from Rests Resuming the position of attention from any of the rests except fall out is done by the command Flight, ATTENTION. On the command Flight, the airmen assume the position of parade rest.At the command ATTENTION, they assume the position of attention. About Face Command: About, FACEOn the command FACE, the right foot is lifted from the hip (knee straight) so it barely clears the ground. The ball of the right foot is placed half a shoe length behind and slightly to the left of the left heel, with unbent knees. You will want to distribute the weight of your body on your left heel and the ball of the right foot.Your legs should be straight but not stiff and your foot position is unchanged. This completes count one of the movement. For count two, you keep your upper body in the position of attention, suspending arm swing, while pivoting 180 degrees to the right using a twisting motion of the hips, balancing on the ball of the right foot and heel of the left foot. When the pivot is complete, your heels should be together and in line and your feet should form a 45-degree angle. The body remains at attention. Eyes Right (Left) Ready Front Commands: Eyes, RIGHT (LEFT) and Ready, FRONTThese are commands that can be given either at a halt or during marching. At the command of RIGHT (LEFT) everyone except those on the right (left) flank turn their heads smartly 45 degrees in the direction of the command (right or left). The command of Ready, FRONT is used to return your head and eyes forward. It is given to the left or right foot strikes the ground. With the command FRONT, you return your head and eyes smartly to the front. Other Drill Commands AttentionRight (Left) FaceSalutePresent Arms and Order ArmsForward March and HalfDouble TimeMark TimeHalf StepRight (Left) StepChange StepTo the Rear MarchFlanking Movement Drill with Weapons During drill, when groups (platoons, company, squadrons, etc) are carrying weapons, there are several commands that move the units weapons in unison to the commands of the group leader: Attention - stand at attention with weapons touching the outside of the right foot parallel to the seam of the trouser. Port Arms - Move weapon from the ground with one hand and grasp weapon with the other hand with the weapon diagonally across the front of the body. Present Arms - Move weapon to center of the body with butt facing down and trigger assembly facing away from the holder.Right Shoulder Arms - Move weapons to the right shoulder, holding the weapon with just the right hand at the butt of the weapon. Left Shoulder Arms - Move weapons to the left shoulder, holding the weapon with just the left hand at the butt of the weapon. Inspection Arms - Similar to port arms but open the chamber of the weapon so group leader can inspect all weapons.Fix Bayonets - With one hand (right) remove bayonet from sheath and place on the end of the weapon while other hand (left) holds the weapon. Parade Rest - Similar to parade rest without a weapon but the right hand will hold the weapon extended at a slight angle in front of the right side of the body, while left hand moves to the small of the back.

At Amazon, you can appeal your firing to a jury of coworkers

At Amazon, you can appeal your firing to a jury of coworkers At Amazon, you can appeal your firing to a jury of coworkers If you’re on the chopping block at your job, the decision of whether or not you get fired is usually in the hands of your manager. At retail giant Amazon, however, you can defend yourself and appeal the decision to a jury of your peers. Announced last year, the “Pivot” probation program is designed to help underperforming employees in danger of being fired in Amazon’s growing workforce. If your manager puts you on this performance-improvement plan, you are reportedly given three options: Quit and receive severance Work to meet scheduled performance goals set by your manager for the next weeks or months Appeal your manager’s decision to put you on this performance-improvement plan to a global jury of coworkers in a video conference Amazon workers on track of being fired can plead their  case in trial-by-juryAmazon said that the global panelists selected for this trial are Amazon workers who have similar titles at the company. The odds of an employee winning their case are not good, however. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, employees lose 70% of the time. The odds are still better than most of us who get to appeal our manager’s decision 0% of the time. If employees win, they reportedly get placed out of Pivot and can choose to work with the boss they just publicly challenged in a video conference duel or can get placed on another team. When they lose, they must choose between the quit and get severance option or the option of completing the performance-improvement plan goals. The reason why employees are likely to lose may come from the structure of the panel itself. Bloomberg reported that employees within the company have complained about the unfairness about the panel. Employees can dismiss panelists tha t they think will be biased against them, but overall employees do not get to choose who they want to be part of their jury. Panelists can be employees who have never worked with you personally. One anonymous Amazon worker said the choice of dismissing panelists does not help her: “At the hearing, the video conference made it difficult to connect with any of the panelists or engage on a personal level, and she sweated through her shirt. She wasn’t invited to watch her boss’s presentation, and he got the last word. She waited by the phone until the career ambassador called to tell her she’d lost,” Bloomberg reported.

How to Have Difficult Conversations at Work

How to Have Difficult Conversations at Work How to Have Difficult Conversations at Work Are you  avoiding a difficult conversation you know you need to have? Ask yourself this question: What will change if I dont have this conversation? The answer: nothing. Thats right. If you avoid the conversation, nothing changes, and  whatever your situation is stays the same. You rob yourself of the ability to solve a nagging problem, or make a change for the better, or even improve your relationship with whomever it is you need to talk to. At work and in life, difficult conversations are inevitable, but they dont have to be paralyzingly difficult. By getting comfortable with the process of having these conversations, you can learn to operate from a place of empowerment rather than fear. Follow these four pillars to have successful conversations: 1. Assessment This is where most of the work comes in. You cant have a successful resolution without a clear assessment of the situation, and that  requires preparation. These are not conversations to have on impulse when emotions are running high. Before the conversation takes place, clearly define the goal. What is the outcome you wish to achieve with this discussion? It can be as simple as having a better working relationship with someone, or as complicated as solving a pervasive company culture problem. Once you have a clear goal in mind, its time to assess the situation.  Consider how you may be contributing to the  matter, and be ready to own your part. Conflict is generally a two-way street, and its unlikely to other person in the conversation deserves all the blame. Also, be sure you dont have a hidden agenda. For example, if your goal  is to have a better working relationship with someone, be careful youre not also looking to win an argument or prove someone wrong. If youre trying to  lay blame somewhere, its best not to have the conversation until youre able to let go of that desire. 2. Approach Part of why the assessment is so  important is because it helps you determine your approach. It is critical that you avoid putting the other person on the defensive. You cant approach the conversation as if you are right and they are wrong. If you do so, it will be over before it even starts. Think of the conversation as a way to explore the situation and learn more about what is going on with the other person. Dont start with We have to talk or do anything else to suggest you think the other person is to blame for something. No one wants to feel like they are in trouble. Instead, acknowledge that there are two of you in this situation and highlight the end goal. For example, you could say, I think we have different opinions on this project, but Id really like to try to understand each other and find a way to work more effectively together. 3. Attitude Your approach will get you started on the right course, but your attitude will steer your conversation to ensure it stays on that course. You have to remain open to hearing the other persons perspective. That doesnt mean you have to agree, but you must acknowledge how the other person feels when you look at it from their point of view. If anyone gets defensive, you  both need to take a step back and address it. If you sense your conversation partner growing defensive, try to defuse the situation with something like, I think youre getting defensive, and thats not my intention. If you feel yourself growing defensive, acknowledge it and hit the pause button for a moment so you can collect yourself. A good way to redirect a derailing conversation is to use a contrasting statement - for example, Im not saying your work on this project isnt good enough. Youve been very committed. What I am saying is that the statistics need a bit more work. If you have to, restate the purpose of the talk. Youre not there to find fault but to work on  achieving a goal together. 4. Action You can talk until the cows come home, but if there is no action, there is no change. The action may be small. It may be something as simple as coming to understand how the other person operates and keeping that in mind. For example, you may be someone  who has lots of creative ideas and gets really excited about them. When you share them, your colleague may look to poke holes in your ideas. You can interpret that as purposefully highlighting the weaknesses of your ideas, but your colleagues intention may be trying to help strengthen your idea. These are two complementary traits that commonly clash in work environments. With the right understanding, however, you and your colleague can use these traits to become a very powerful team together. - Some conversations are more difficult than others, but with the right preparation and mindset, you may be surprised to see just how painless the process can be. How to Ask for An Information Interview

How to Ask for An Information Interview How to Ask for An Information Interview Ask Amanda: How Do I Ask My Network for Help? Each week, TopResume's career advice expert, Amanda Augustine, answers user questions like the one below from Quora and the Ask Amanda form. A certified professional career coach (CPCC) and resume writer (CPRW), Amanda has been helping professionals improve their careers for over 10 years. Have a question for Amanda? Submit it here. Q: How do I ask my network for help? What's the best way to ask people in my network for an informational interview without making it sound like I need a favor? Mani R. Great question, Mani! Kudos for understanding the importance of conducting informational interviews. This is one of my favorite and one of the most overlooked networking tactics, especially for those who recently graduated college or are considering a career change. The concept of an informational interview also known as an informational conversation was first introduced by Richard N. Bolles, author of the book What Color is Your Parachute? In his book, Bolles recommends that job seekers set up interviews with professionals working in their fields of interest to collect more information before choosing a particular career path. The goal of these information-gathering sessions is not to necessarily get a job lead though that can happen. Instead, the focus of these informal conversations is to gather intel so you can make smarter decisions about your career path. Related:The 8 Best Questions to Ask in anInformational Interview Not only is this a great tactic when you're trying to narrow down your career goals or you need help launching a career transition, but it can also be helpful in gaining insight into a prospective employer you're targeting as part of your job search. How to ask your network for help Prioritize your connections Think about your current career goals, taking into account the industry, the line of work, and the employers in which you're interested. Then, take a good look at your first and second connections via LinkedIn to determine if you know anyone who currently works or previously worked in that field, industry, or for that company. Prioritize those contacts first. In addition to the people who are directly connected to the industry or company you're pursuing, make a list of the people you consider to be the social butterflies among your circle of friends. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of the book The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, refers to these people as powerful connectors and an important gateway to other valuable connections. The natural connectors in your personal network, regardless of their industries or professions, will likely be able to introduce you to people you would not meet otherwise. Be specific Your network can't help you if they don't know what your job goals are or what type of help you're looking for. Simply stating I'm looking for a job. Can you help? won't get you any closer to landing a job. Instead, be thoughtful about who you approach and what you ask for. For instance, some people in your network might be able to share their experiences working in a particular field or industry, while others can provide insider information on a desirable employer's interview practices. When you reach out to a networking connection for help, be clear with your request. If you're planning to reach out to someone you don't know personally, make sure your objective is spelled out in your subject line. Here are a few sample subject lines to try out: Looking for advice about the [field or industry] Friend of [mutual acquaintance] who needs your advice Fellow [your industry or function] professional who needs your advice Fellow [your alma mater] grad looking for advice Big fan of your work looking for advice Ask for a call, not a coffee date In the past, I always defaulted to the standard informational interview request of Can I pick your brain over a cup of coffee?and I believe the approach is still worth your while when you're reaching out to a friend or close connection from your professional network. There's nothing wrong with catching up over a beverage and asking for some advice. However, this type of request is not as effective when you're approaching someone who is practically a stranger. In those cases, you're better off asking for 10 minutes of someone's time over the phone. A 10-minute phone call requires less investment from the other person than a face-to-face meeting. As a result, they're more likely to agree to share their pearls of wisdom with you. Sample networking messages Hi [Name], Our mutual friend, [mutual acquaintance], recommended I reach out to you as I'm currently exploring a career change and am interested in learning more about [industry or field]. Based on your profile and what [mutual acquaintance] shared, it's clear you've had a successful a career [at a specific company or in a particular industry or field]! Would you be open to speaking for 10 minutes next week? I'd love to learn more about your experience [with a specific company or in a particular industry or field]. Thanks in advance for your help. Take care and have a great day. [Your name] Click on the following link to check out Danny Rubin's free email samples. Don't ask for a job Remember, the goal of an informational interview is not to secure a job lead. While this may occur naturally, it shouldn't be your primary objective. Use this opportunity to pick your contact's brain, learn their personal career story, and share your goals and career narrative as well. As a result, you're sure to receive great career advice and valuable insights into a new field. Say thank you The lessons you learned in kindergarten also apply to your job search. Workers Compensation and Disability Benefits Information

Workers Compensation and Disability Benefits Information Workers Compensation and Disability Benefits Information Are you unable to work because of an injury or illness? If so, you may be eligible to receive workers compensation or disability benefits. Workers Compensation Employees who are injured or become ill on the job are covered by state workers compensation laws. In every state, employers are required to have  workers compensation insurance,  though there are a few exemptions. Benefits include payment for lost wages and payment of medical bills. However, you will only be paid a portion (usually two-thirds) of your salary. The first step in filing a claim is to notify your employer. Your employer should be able to supply you with the forms needed to file a claim. If they cant, contact your state’s Workers Compensation Office  immediately. Disability Insurance California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island have state-sponsored disability programs. These programs are typically short-term, and the benefit amounts are low. In New York, for example, the weekly benefit amount is 50% of the employees average weekly wage, up to $170 for a maximum of 26 weeks. Your employer, both in these states and in the rest of the country, may also voluntarily provide additional  disability coverage. So, if you are unable to work, your first step should be to inquire as to what insurance your employer provides. If you have your own disability coverage, file a claim with that insurance company as well. If you dont have state or employer-based coverage, consider purchasing disability insurance while youre healthy. First, check with your employer to see what coverage they provide, then ask if you can purchase supplemental coverage. Calculate if the benefits youll get will be enough to maintain your lifestyle in the event of unanticipated disability. If theyre not, consider purchasing personal disability insurance. Social Security Disability To qualify for benefits, you must first have worked in jobs covered by Social Security.
