Caroline Steele - Zoologist and Education Adviser, Taronga Zoo

Caroline Steele - Zoologist and Education Adviser, Taronga Zoo Caroline Steele Zoologist and Education Adviser, Taronga ZooPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister I worked at Taronga Zoo as a volunteer when I was much younger and did work experience here. The fact that I get to work with animals every day is fantastic. Caroline obtained a degree with Honours in Zoology before going on to work as a school science teacher for ten years. She then went back to her first love and now works at Sydneys Taronga Zoo teaching children about animals and their environments, including environmental education and conservation. Caroline revealed some of the options of pursuing zoology careers for people who are interested in working with animals. What do you do in your day-to-day job? I do a variety of different jobs and activities. I am a member of a team of eight teachers at Tarongas Education Department and in my main program I coordinate the Schools Zoomobile. The Zoomobile visits about 13 regional areas within NSW every year as well as lots of schools in the Sydney metro area. FYI The Taronga Zoomobile is an outreach program that gives students who have difficulty coming to the zoo a chance to meet, learn about and interact with native wildlife. Being part of a bigger team gives me the opportunity to work on other programs with local schools and teach classes here at the zoo. We see roughly 150 000 students a year. A range of interactive workshops are offered at the zoo for the school curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 and tertiary level. Students can either come through the zoo as a self-guided excursion with teachers, or with a workshop included where the students get the chance to interact with at least five live animals including reptiles, mammals and amphibians. The team works with many schools doing project-based learning units on current conservation and in situ (habitat-based) programs occurring at the zoo. FYI In situ is a Latin schlagwort meani ng in the place and refers to working with animals in their natural habitat. Ex situ is off-site conservation such as wildlife programs in zoos. What do you teach the students? The role of the zoo is always evolving, the focus has moved from menageries to eco museums to biogeographical exhibits. Conservation and education are the key focus now which is represented through all workshops at the zoo. The workshops or project-based learning activities at the zoo have clear conservation messages integrated into knowledge, understanding and skills within the school curriculum. What do you enjoy about your job? The fact that I get to work with animals every day is fantastic. In a typical lesson in the Zoomobile, I will show at least six animals to the students, which they can interact with including a snake, possum, frog, echidna, lizard, young crocodile, cockatoo and Tawny Frogmouth. It is powerful to actually see the kids change their attitudes and come away with positive conservation a ctions. Being able to combine environmental education with my passion, which is zoology, is just a dream for me. What other animals do you work with? We use a lot of Australian animals. All the animals at the Education Centre are usually rescued by the public and brought to the Taronga Wildlife Hospital or confiscated animals from Customs which can not be released back into the wild. Teaching an adaptations lesson may involve a close-up interaction with a Bearded Dragon and Shingleback Lizard to compare their adaptations and suitability to the environments they live in. Ive also worked on the Little Penguin in situ program with local schools on the Northern Beaches and the Boorolong frog in situ program with regional NSW schools. Hand-raising possums and bandicoots has also been a bonus. How do the kids react to the animals? Students today have little experience with live animals, particularly students who live in urban areas. They seem to be unconnected to even their local areas a nd the uniqueness of Australian native fauna. At first, most students are petrified of any animal due to a lack of connectedness to the environment. Whats the funniest thing an animal has done when youve been showing it to students? Going to the toilet always gets a laugh. If an animal does seem funny or unsettled it is usually a sign of stress and the animal will be placed back into its enclosure. What are some other jobs available at the zoo? Zookeeping is the obvious one, but we have 300 people who work here in all sorts of capacities from exhibit planning, research scientists, sponsorship and fundraising, to media and public relations (PR). What did you do before you became an education adviser? I worked at Taronga as a volunteer when I was much younger and did work experience here. I always knew that I would like to work in this field, but its quite competitive becoming a zookeeper involves years of volunteering and casual keeping before becoming permanent. I have an inter est in education so decided to train as a high school science teacher and hoped to eventually combine education with flora and fauna with an interactive element. I have worked as a science teacher in London and Sydney since 1997. What did your degree in zoology entail? When I studied zoology at university the focus was very much on fauna taxonomic groups and behaviours. I did some entomology courses looking at insects as well as some courses on genetics and animal behaviour. I did my thesis on the reproductive behaviour of dragonflies. Do you need a Zoology Degree to become a zookeeper? Not at all. A lot of zookeepers do have a Zoology degree or some kind of biology background, but it is acceptable to just have a Certificate III in Captive Animals which you can do through the Taronga Training Institute. Volunteer work is always helpful. So, what are your future career aspirations? I love my job as it is, but I would absolutely love to be able to interact mora with schools at a teach er level and also to get teachers more engaged with sustainable education. I dont think environmental education is addressed enough in the curriculum as it is. What advice would you give to someone interested in moving into this field? You really have to work for it. Working as a volunteer in a zoological organisation is very important to get your foot in door. Here at Taronga Zoo, you can become a discovery host where you interact with the public and handle animals. There is also an excellent program called YATZ (Youth at the Zoo) for 14 to 19 year olds, which allows kids to come in and get a bit of experience to get a feel for what zookeeping is like. You have to be aware that you arent necessarily going to come into a zoo situation and be able to just cuddle animals all the time. Its more about conservation, research and education. 4 Famous Resume Lies and Their Lessons - FlexJobs

4 Famous Resume Lies and Their Lessons - FlexJobs4 Famous Resume Lies and Their Lessons -324 Famous Resume Lies and Their LessonsThe Lie Scott Thompson, CEO of Yahoo, told resume lies about his education stating he earned degrees in accounting AND computer science, when never received the latter. The Lesson If you dont have the specific educational credentials for your field, its much better to take classes than to tell resume lies about earning an entire degree on your resume. Educational credentials are easily checked, so be smart and actually earn the credentials you list. The Lie Robert Irvine, the former star of Food Networks Dinner Impossible, was caught over-stating his work history and lost his television show in 2008. While Irvine did work for the White House and Britains Royal Family, he did not as he stated create Princess Dianas wedding cake, cook White House Dinners, nor was he knighted by the queen. Big resume lies such as these are typically discovered. The Lesson If yo uve got great experience on your resume, dont muck it up by embellishing your already-solid credentials. Have confidence in your true skills and abilities, rather than claiming someone elses. Irvines skills were still so excellent he was invited back to the Food Network in 2009 and continues to host or guest star in a variety of successful shows. It turns out he didnt really need to tell resume lies, did he?The Lie Michael Brown, the former Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), resigned after his mishandling of the response to Hurricane Katrina. To get the job in the first place, Brown claimed hed overseen emergency services for the City of Edmund, Oklahoma and that hed worked at the University of Central Oklahoma as a professor, but neither of these were true. The Lesson Telling lies on your resume can hurt a lot more than just your reputation and your career prospects. In situations where public health and safety are at stake, landing a job youre not qualified for by offering false information on your job application can have disastrous consequences. The Lie Current Vice President Joe Biden ran for president way back in 1988, but during the campaign it was discovered he song about attending law school on a full scholarship (he had only a partial scholarship) and about graduating in the top half of his class (he was 76th out of 85). When the truth came out, Biden had to abandon his presidential bid.The Lesson On your resume, the most important information you should give about your education are the degrees you earned. Why add a bunch of resume lies in the form ofexaggerated half-truths about scholarships and class placement? We often feel the need to bump ourselves up a bit to compete with other job candidates, but those little white lies can be just as detrimental as the big ones. So, the next time youre updating your resume, go through each bit of information to make sure youre already telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about your qualifications. Most of the people on this list lied when they were young and just starting their careers, but the truth still haunted them years later. Dont make the same mistake clean up your resume now so you dont have to worry about later. Resume lies are just not worth it.Readers, have you heard of other famous resume lies? Share with us

Sample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to Quit

Sample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to QuitSample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to QuitSometimes your resignation brings you a sigh of relief, and you are counting your lucky stars to get out of your current job. Maybe you had an employer who was awful or coworkers who gossiped and slacked off on the job.Perhaps your job was so boring that, even trying as hard as you could, you were unable to make the daily grind more interesting. Whatever your reason for wanting to quit, youll want to keep your leave-taking professional. Your resignation letter should reflect a positive, optimistic, forward-looking spirit. Dont blow possible future opportunities with a negative resignation. You never know where or when you could run into the people who witness your resignation and read your resignation letter. You want them to feel positive about you for the future. They could end up in your new company, at your new job, or affect whether you are hired or promoted in the futur e. You just never know, as lifes career course is impossible to predict. Consequently, keep your resignation positive and upbeat. Dont leave a negative impression with your resignation in your permanent personnel file. You can resign from your job in a positive manner. You wont regret putting a positive spin on your resignation from your job, even when youre just happy to get out of there. Resist the temptation to send a resignation letter that says, Im outta here, or Good luck, suckers. Both of these negative approaches were used by not-too-smart quitters in the past. Resignation Letter Dos and Donts Begin your resignation letter with a standard date, the name of theaddressee, usually your direct manager or supervisor, and company address, just as you would any business letter. If you have personal stationery, plan to print the resignation letter to fit your stationery. If not, use a plain piece of quality white paper to print your resignation letter. Never write a resignation letter using your current employers stationery. (Yes, it has happened- unfortunately.) Your resignation letter, especially in the instance of an employer youd like to forget, can be short and sweet. If there was something- anything- that you liked about your job, you can mention it. Make sure that you copy Human Resources for your file and to trigger all of the necessary employment ending events. Also, a good policy is to sleep on your letter overnight before mailing it, to ensure that it is appropriate when you reread your resignation letter in the morning. Again, you can professionally resign without burning bridges. Youll be happy that you did, at some point in time. How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation

How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap ConversationHow the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation Equal Pay Day is celebrated this year on April 2, a day meant to raise awareness about the gap between men and womens wages . Research shows that today, in 2019, the gap sits at 21 cents between white women and men- and only widens for women of color and other ethnicities . Perhaps whats even mora disturbing is the number of people who refuse to believe the pay gap even exists Many people attribute the gap to womens choices to take time off to start and raise families, or to enter into industries that offer lower starting pay. But organizations such as the American Association of University Women (or AAUW) are working diligently to not only close the pay gap but change the conversation surrounding it. As its CEO Kim Churches explains, AAUWs mission is to advance gender equity for wom en and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Pay equity is a critical part of what we do Until there is equal pay for equal work, women will never achieve full equality. But its employees believe closing the gap isnt just about advancing womens rights to equality- its also about ushering in economic change that will positively impact everyone in the U.S.The gender pay gap hinders women throughout their lives, from the day they leave college with higher levels of debt, to when they are raising families, all the way into retirement when women collect less in pensions and Social Security, explains Churches. And, as a result, more women than men are living below the poverty level. But, she continues, this isnt only about women Equal pay is a matter of basic fairness that benefits everyone- women, their families, their communities, employers, ur economy, and our society as a whole. And Churches has a message for those who dont believe the pay gap exists The pay gap is math, n ot myth, she says. Women arent choosing lower paying jobs- rather, certain jobs pay less because they are dominated by women. An example Librarians predominantly women earn less than IT professionals, who are mostly men. But being a librarian entails at least the same level of skills and training than an IT professional, in some cases more.According to Glassdoors own Salary Tool , which allows users to search the median salaries in their chosen fields by job title, Churches is correct An IT professional can expect to be paid $85,460, according to Glassdoor , while a librarian can expect to earn $57,135 per year .Whats more, AAUW believes societal expectations have steered women into roles that pay less money , such as teachers, counselors, and childcare workers, Churches says, which is an important distinction in the conversation about whether women are to blame for any wage gap that may (or may not, according to naysayers) exist. In fields traditionally dominated by men, th ere are still barriers and biases that get in the way of womens success, she says. The AAUW has the research to back up these claims. AAUWs research has shown, in an apples-to-apples comparison, just one year out of college, women are paid almost 7percent less than their male colleagues who made the same degree and career choices, Churches says. Put another way, a man and woman who graduate the same year, with the same degree, and who are hired for the same job at the same company would be paid differently. Our research shows the pay gap exists for every degree level and in every occupation, she continues. In fact, when women enter male-dominated, high paying professions, salaries as a whole actually decrease. That means that in high-paying fields such as technology or medicine or finance, women experience an even greater pay gap than in other industries. Churches sums up how many feel Hard to believe this is still happening in 2019, but it is.Its not easy to fight for equal pay- especially when the gap itself isnt even equal. The AAUWs latest research report, The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap , shows that black women, on average, are paid just 61 cents- while Native American women make 58 cents and Latina women earn just 53 cents- of what men are paid in the same exact jobs. There are complex and deep-rooted reasons for this, but the bottom line is that women of color live at the intersection of racism and sexism, explains Churches. The historical experience of minorities in this country has resulted in an enormous sortiment of economic inequality, and the wider pay gap is just one manifestation of that. Consider this The typical black household possesses just six percent of the wealth owned by the typical white household, and this carries over into challenges for womens opportunities in education and job choice. And the wealth disparity is similar with other racial and ethnic groups. But the AAUW is aggressively advocating for change, despite the challenges, Churches says, and for a long time. Some 55 years ago, it advocated for the Equal Pay Act of 1963 , a measure aimed at stopping wage disparity based on sex. The AAUW also stood beside President Barack Obama when he signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act , an act that gives federal recourse to employees who believe they have been victims of pay discrimination. Today, were continuing our work to advance pay equity on many fronts, says Churches. Our AAUW members and advocates are working with states and localities to pass equal pay laws- and were seeing a tremendous momentum. In fact, last year along, 40 states and Washington, D.C. considered legislation to help close the gender pay gap, she says, with six states successfully enacting new laws. And on a national level, we are working to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act , which would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963.The AAUW also works directly with employers to improve their policies, practices, and workplace cultures so they can move toward pay equity and encourage more women to succeed in leadership roles, Churches describes. And were working with individual women by training them valuable salary negotiation skills through our proven Work Smart program , which offers in-person training as well as a free online course available to anyone. We have a bold goal of training 10 mio women in salary negotiation by 2022. Its efforts seem to be paying off, at least in the private sector Companies are very aware that they need to achieve pay equity so they can attract the strongest possible workforce, says Churches. And they also realize that paying people fairly is good for their bottom line They know that equal pay fosters higher retention rates and raises productivity. So, every day, were hearing more about employers who are ready and eager to do the right thing. If you, too, would like to help close the pay gap, the AAUW says there is plenty of work to go around. A great first step, C hurches says, would be to pay attention to local, state, and federal legislation on the pay gap and be poised to contact your elected officials whenever possible to encourage them to support measures that will advance equal pay. The AAUW also offers a Two-Minute Activist tool, which will keep you up-to-date on important pay news and then supply you the tools- like letter templates and addresses- to take action.Of course, closing the pay gap can start with you, literally. If you can negotiate higher pay for yourself, you are working to close that gap. To help on that front, we created Work Smart , an easy online course that teaches women salary negotiation skills- and weve set a bold goal of training 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022, says Churches. The course takes a very practical- and effective- approach toward salary negotiation We teach women how research salaries in their fields and geographic areas so they have accurate expectations about what a particular po sition should pay. And you can also always check out Glassdoors ample resources for how to negotiate a higher salary , too

Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014

Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014Train your Brain to Think Like a Futurist in 2014 Sommers, author of Think Like a Futurist Know What Changes, What Doesnt, And Whats Next(Jossey-Bass, 2013)You may be downing your Starbucks Venti. You may be driving your car, or telling your kids to pick up their backpacks. Whatever youre doing, youre thinking about the future. The human brain is wired to make predictions. Constantly. In each moment, its assessing the situation and, based on past experience, makes assumptions about what comes nextHaving landed a big project over coffee, youll tell your assistant to clear all personal appointments from your calendar for the next monthWhen the queue to the freeway entrance ramp is longer than usual, youll plan an alternate route homeWhen the tell-tale stink of stale sweat wafts into your house, youll know that your son needs to replace the dirty gym clothes in his pack with a fresh set for t omorrow.Thinking Ahead vs Thinking Like a FuturistYour brain is jumping ahead even as you read this sentence, interpreting marks on the page as familiar letters, words, sentences, and meaning. The vocabulary is quite basic, so you already know what comes ________.See, you are thinking about the future. (Correct answer Next) But you are not thinking like a futurist.Heres the difference. Thinking about the future uses past experience to anticipate what comes next. Thinking like a futurist rejects this backward-looking orientation and instead looks sideways, backwards, forwards, and upside down in buchen to envision an unexperienced, and often unexpected, future it is a different exercise of the brain.Futurist Thinking in Business Neurologically, thinking about the future is simply a reconfiguration of past memories and feelings. We know this because, using brain scans, cognitive scientists have recently observed that the area of the brain that lights up when we recall a memory also l ights up when were asked to imagine a future event.Early in the human evolutionary process, this quick-fill pattern of foresight helped us run the other way when, say, we recognized the paw prints of a Saber-toothed tiger. If he was there yesterday hell be there again today. This pattern of thinking is also used in cumulative learning (from arithmetic to algebra to calculus), to get through everyday tasks efficiently. And, if you ascribe to Malcolm Gladwells Outliers rule of 10,000 hours, achieve mastery in your field. However, pulling from the past to create the future can also trap you in what I call the Permanent Present, a linear continuation of current conditions. In a world that is increasingly discontinuous, the brains default prediction mechanism is a liability. Witness the erosion of market share of the once dominant Blackberry smartphone, plummeting from a Crackberry-worthy 44% in 2009 to a Slackberry-nadir of 1% in 2013.Contrarily, by committing to a bold, future-forward d igital sttarifgy aimed at Millennials, Burberrys stock price rose 200% in six years. Burberrys brand story remains consistent with its heritage as a 150-year-old luxury brand and, by reimagining retail as a digital-first experience, it is also consistent with where the future is headed. What worked for Burberry worked for innovators like Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Warby Parker, and it will work for you a creative leap into a scenario that looks different than your past.Train your Brain to Think Like a FuturistCreative leaps come when memories are combined in unexpected ways what neuroscientists call associative fluency a facility that grows in direct proportion to the memories it draws from. It also grows with practice here are three tips for training your brain to think like a futurist1.Change perspectiveChoose experiences that literally shift your perspective Go skydiving. Interview someone whose experience and beliefs are different than your own. Take a survival challe nge. Challenge yourself to do something thats scary every day.2.Look under the hoodGet curious about how things work. Dive into different disciplines and keep asking why Study philosophy. Go the planetarium. Talk to a political campaign manager. Listen to science lecturers. Read history. Visit a factory. Take the opposing side of an issue.3.Give it a restAn unfocused state of mind is often where it all comes together. As you turn down your attention on the external world, your brain will start connecting unrelated experiences in new ways Take a walk. Stare out the window. Lie in the sun. Get a massage. Book a session in a flotation tank. Meditate. Sit by the fire, or on a porch. Paint a room. Go running.Use these three steps in innovationchallenges or whenever you feel stuck. Build them into your problem-solving method, and in workshops. The more you practice, the more your associative fluency will grow, and the more your brain will fill in the blanks of the future with new possibil ities. The rise of Internet of Things, Big Data, and 3D printing is challenging everything we already know. Its also accelerating the rate of change and of innovation. To navigate this future, our thinking has to become as rich and varied as the world around us a world that demands that each of us is thinking like a futurist.Author BioCecily Sommers, author of Think Like a Futurist Know What Changes, What Doesnt, And Whats Next(Jossey-Bass, 2013) is the founder and president of The Push Institute, a non-profit think tank that tracks significant global trends and their implications for business, government, and the non-profit sector.
